Do you have an upcoming move that you want to handle on your own? If so, it helps to know some tips for moving your own furniture. It will help prevent you from accidentally breaking anything during the move, which can end up being a costly mistake depending on what you damage.

Using A Piano Dolly

A piano dolly is a bit harder to use than you think. You can use two people to lift heavy objects onto it, but it will really take three to get the job done right. Start by having two people deadlift the heavy item that you are about to place on the dolly, then have a third person slide the piano dolly underneath so that the weight is centered on the dolly. That third person can really help with the exact placement of the piano dolly.

When pushing the piano dolly onto a moving trump ramp, the drawers of a furniture item should be facing the include of the ramp so that they do not slide outward. With two people controlling both sides of the item, it will help to have that third person gently lift the wheels of the dolly over the bottom bump to get onto the moving truck ramp. This may need to be done again to get the dolly onto the moving ramp itself.

Using An Appliance Dolly

An appliance dolly works great for moving a refrigerator, washer, or drawer. These are appliances that are really heavy but small enough to easily fit on a dolly. Start by wrapping the item with moving pads so that the finish does not become scratched. Tilt the item forward slightly so that the appliance dolly can slide underneath. Use the straps of the appliance dolly to prevent the item from moving. There will be a lever on the dolly that will pull the straps tight.

Use a second person to help tilt the dolly back and stabilize the item that you are moving. You should be able to easily move the item as long as the center of the item's weight is above the wheels of the appliance dolly. A second person can also help with balance as you are going up the ramp onto the truck. Have both wheels of the dolly go over bumps at the same time to prevent the weight from becoming unstable.

Don't want to do all this heavy lifting? Have a residential moving company do it for all you.
