Get On-Site Estimates

As you would when hiring any other service, you should get a few estimates before choosing a company. When hiring movers, you need to make sure these are on-site estimates. Some moving companies will give you a rough quote over the phone, but it is tough to do this accurately. If the movers come to your home and see what you actually have, they can give you a more accurate idea of how much your move will cost. Some will even give you a binding on-site estimate — which is essentially a promise that your move will only cost the amount quoted, and not more.

Do Not Write Off Packages That Include Packing

People often figure they will pack themselves and let the movers do everything else. And this is a perfectly fair approach. However, hiring movers to pack your things may be more affordable than you think. Many moving companies have service packages that include packing, and one of these packages may cost only a little more than having the company just load and transport your stuff. Get a price for packing before you decide whether it is right for you.

Be Present, If Possible

If you are able to be at your home when the movers show up, be there. The movers may have questions about disassembling certain furniture, packing certain items, or scheduling their arrival. It is easier to answer these questions if you are on-site. You do not have to help the movers move. You can work on your computer in a spare room or start cleaning the home for move-out. Just make sure the movers know you are there if they need you.

If you are not able to be physically present during the move, make sure the movers know they can call you at any time. Keep your phone on and near you so you can answer.
